Obituary for Monroe "Junior" Dickerson Jr.

Athens - Funeral Services for Monroe “Junior” Dickerson of Athens are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 21, 2018 at the Living for the Brand Cowboy Church in Athens with Brother Dale Perry officiating. Interment will follow at Poynor Cemetery under the direction of Hannigan Smith Funeral Home of Athens.

Monroe Dickerson passed December 18, 2018 in Athens, Texas.

Monroe Jefferson Dickerson Jr. was born January 20, 1930 in Poynor, Texas the son of Monroe Jefferson Dickerson Sr. and Katy Belle McKinley Dickerson. He was a longtime member of the Living for the Brand Cowboy Church. He was part of the Pipeliner’s Local Union # 798 in Tulsa, Oklahoma for 60 years and worked on pipelines in 42 states. During that time, he was one of the first #798 members in 1974 to go to Alaska to start work on the Trans-Alaska Pipeline Project His work as a pipeliner earned him a spot on the National Pipeliner’s Hall of Fame. Junior was avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting; especially on his deer lease, the Salt Branch Ranch in Mason, Texas for over 46 years. He truly enjoyed working at the homeplace in his yard, cutting hay and working as a cattle rancher. Junior could fix anything, and he enjoyed spending time with family. He loved his kids and grandkids and will be missed by all that knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 47 years Sylvia Jane Morman Dickerson; sister Patricia House and brother Paul Dickerson.

Monroe is survived by his three children, Tommy Dickerson and wife Jyner of Poynor, Shelley Jannasch and husband Robert of Lewisville, Amanda Brumfield and husband Scott of Opelika; three sisters, Billie Henderson of Plant City, Florida, Barbara Hanks and husband Lloyd of Poynor, Darlyne Barnette of Calander Lake; brothers and sisters-in-law Charles Morman and wife Virginia of Malakoff, Walter Morman and wife Polly of Tyler, Kathie Morman of Athens; four grandchildren, Trent Dickerson, Tye Anne Hamil and husband Clayton, Blaine Brumfield, Layne Brumfield and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Serving as pallbearers will be Mike Hanks, Kevin Fitzgerald, Jason Fitzgerald, Russell Lemons, Vance Anderson, Casey Tuttle, Larry Bush and Wayne Pickle. Honorary pallbearers will be Dustin Adams, Shaun Hanks, Jamie Hanks, KC Holman, Preston Eaton, Billy Paris, Richard Jenkins, Mark Morman, Kyle Turner, Darrell Hillhouse and Brett Morman.

Visitation will be held Thursday, December 20, 2018 at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home from 5-7:00 p.m.
